Happy Pride Month!

Pride Month, celebrated each June, honors the LGBTQ+ community’s history, achievements, and ongoing struggles for equality. Its origins trace back to the Stonewall Riots, a series of demonstrations by LGBTQ+ individuals in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969.

This pivotal moment sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The first Pride marches occurred in 1970, marking the riots’ one-year anniversary. Over the decades, these celebrations have evolved into a global phenomenon, recognized officially in many countries and cities worldwide.

Celebrating Pride Month can take many forms, ranging from parades and festivals to educational events and advocacy efforts. Parades and festivals often feature vibrant displays of rainbow flags, performances, and speeches, fostering a sense of community and visibility. Educational events, such as lectures, workshops, and film screenings, highlight the history and ongoing issues
faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

For more information on becoming an advocate or to learn about more organizations who support the LGBTQ+ community, several are listed below.

Self Care Tips

The winner of the May President’s Pause is Jenny Ng!

Check out these tips on self-care from some members:

“My favorite self-care is movement and making sure I’m not overbooked after coming off an event so I can spend quality time with family as well as having some time to decompress.  Oftentimes we are back to back with events and tasks so important to be intentional in these areas.”
– Jenny Ng

“My 2 best recommendations for selfcare is…1) talk to someone…it could be a GMC member, a therapist, a friend or anyone.   Just tell them you need them to listen and get it out.   There is so much value in verbalizing and release of stress.  2) use breathing exercises…the power of your breath is remarkable to your stress level.  Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique.  The 4-7-8 breathing technique involves breathing in for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds. This breathing pattern aims to reduce anxiety or help people get to sleep. It is a form of pranayama, which is the practice of breath regulation.”
– Rachael Riggs, Former GMC President

President’s Pause

For many, the month of June represents, more time in the sun, BBQs, family outings, vacation time, figuring out how to keep the children busy with school ending for the summer, etc. However, for many of us in this industry, summer means, more travel, more meetings, more calls, more planning, just busy, busy, busy, busy! But we must not allow our professional life to consume all the beautiful hours that we are allotted to enjoy the sun, to be present with our family and friends and to just be. What is the one thing you are looking forward to experiencing this month?
